Blog 2: Skipping in the Street

Kris is one of the original members of the Big River Racing Team and has been a huge part of the cohesiveness of the womens team. She has a tough job as a CPA, especially during tax season when she is putting in 80 hour work weeks, but she still manages to get out of bed at 5:45am and go for her daily run. She doesn't think she'll be a good blog writer but hopefully her husband Dustin can help her out...he's a pretty funny dude.

Skipping in the Street:

10.14.09 (5 weeks out)

This past week was great except for all of the rain!  The workouts went as planned on Wednesday we did 4 x 2 miles, I was trying to hit 13:10.  I ran 13:10, 13:09, 13:12, 13:09.  The other workout of the week was a fast finish long run, the plan was to run the last 3 miles in at least goal pace which is 6:45, I went out a little hard in 6:28 and decided to let the momentum carry me and ended with a 6:33 and 6:24.  Overall the week was good and I had another weekly mileage in the low 70s.

So back to the rain, I was lucky and only had to run in it once, Thursday afternoon.  I told myself going out the door that I was tough for getting out there and that I was only going to get stronger because of it.  Half way through my run I started thinking that everyone in their cars must think I'm nuts as I'm sure I looked like a drowned rat!  I also had several other random thoughts one being that the run reminded me a lot of the Twin Cities marathon where it poured for what seemed like 10 miles but probably was only five, and then I started thinking about the San Antonio marathon and hoping the weather was better than last year.  Even though I had all the random thoughts I really enjoyed running in the rain.

This week has started off great.  I got up Monday morning and ran 8 miles in the darkness, but it was nice because there were quite a few people out and about in Francis.  I then did drills and strides, I had all intentions of doing them in the park, but it was still dark.  So to the street I went, I'm sure my neighbors think I'm crazy as I was skipping and bounding in the street at 6:45 in the morning.  I got in my run on Tuesday morning which was great since Blazers Practice was in the afternoon.  Watching those kids practice helps keep running in perspective and it is cool to see so many youngsters having so much fun running.

Now for the rest of the week, Wednesday is 12 x 800 at 10K race pace, I'm going to try to do these in 3:05.  The other workout of the week is the Go St. Louis 10K on Sunday.  I would be happy with anything under 38:30, but would love to break 38:00.  The goal is to keep the mileage in the 70s for this week, before beginning to back off.  5 weeks to go

The power of the group :

10.4.09 (6 weeks out)

I have officially made it through half of the marathon training segment and it is going great.  I just finished my highest mileage week in 4 years at 75 miles, and hope to do another 2 or 3 at this before cutting back for the race.

I was able to incorporate some speed stuff this week with the 24 400s on Wednesday.  First set 94-96 and second set 90-92.  There was some marathon pace stuff with the 12 miles today at marathon pace (6:42 average) and am looking forward to the 4 x 2miles on Wednesday.

This week was great because twice I was able to run with Jen and Margaret in the morning. We all live close enough that we each leave our house at six and just pick each other up along the way.  It is great have a group to run with on a daily basis and has made this segment much easier.  If I could provide advice to any new or beginner runner it would be to find a group to run with it.  Even you can't keep up with individuals just knowing that there are other people out hitting the roads like you, makes it easier to get out the door.
