***NEW THIS YEAR***: Friday we will end 2011 in style with an end-of-camp indoor track meet at MICDS High School! Campers will be broken into heats and will get to experience racing indoors
over the one mile distance with their fellow campers can counselors cheering for them all the way!!

MISSION:

To provide 7th -12th graders who participate in the sport of distance running with four days of winter training, classes and speeches from elite runners, and a whole lot of fun!



Big River Running Company is committed to being the area's number-one resource for youth and high school running. Our website, bigriverrunning.com, provides young athletes with interviews and training tips from the area's top runners as well as interviews and videos from big meets, rankings and more. In September, Big River sponsored the sixth annual Forest Park Cross Country Festival, with more than 3,400 athletes from over 170 teams! This camp is another great way for us to give back to the running community and an even better way for young athletes to learn about the importance of year-long training for distance running


WHO IS CAMP FOR:

Big River Winter Distance Camp is for any 7th-12th grader who is interested in distance running. The Winter Distance Camp has become a holiday tradition amongst high school and middle school runners. Everyone from complete beginners to State Champions and runners from more than 60 different schools have attend the camp since its existence. So whether you are looking to be Missouri’s next State Champ or you just want to find out more about the sport of distance running this camp is for you!


CAMP STAFF:

Matt Helbig: Matt has extensive coaching expe-rience at both the high school and college levels. As an assistant coach at Rockwood Summit (since 2006) he has coached the Falcons to four individu-al state titles including a runner up finish in the 2011 Class 4 Team Championship. He was also a graduate assistant coach at Division I Iowa State University where he was the Director of Recruiting. Matt's own running accomplishments include being a Missouri High School State Champion in the 800 meters and a Division II All-American in cross country and track. He boasts a personal best of 4:10 for the mile.

Ben Rosario: Ben is the other co-owner of Big River Running Company. Ben's coaching experience includes two years at the junior high level in Rochester Hills, MI. He currently works with the Saint Louis Blazers Track Club as the team's head coach. He has guided several of Big River's top runners including Steph Hood who ran a 2:35 marathon in 2008. Ben's running resumé includes two years running professionally for the Hansons Brooks Distance Project where he was the youngest qualifier for the 2004 US Olympic Trials Marathon. He also qualified for the 2008 Trials and has personal bests of 2:18:53 for the Marathon and 4:03 for the mile.

Mike Nelson: Mike is the head cross country and assistant track and field coach for Marquette University in Milwaukee. As the youngest Head Coach in the prestigious Big East Conference his team competes against cross country powerhouses such as Notre Dame and Providence on a regular basis. On the track, Nelson has coached 7 USATF Junior National qualifiers , 6 NCAA Qualifiers & in XC 5 All-Regional performers. He has also guided 2 Academic All-Americans. A Missouri All-State high school athlete himself, Mike also competed at the Division II National Cross Coun-try Meet in 2001 and 2002.

Joe Porter: Joe is the head cross country and track coach at Saint Louis University High School. He took over the head coach position after four very successful years as an assistant coach during which time the Jr. Bills won two State cross country championships.


SPECIAL GUESTS: Campers can expect to see some of Missouri’s best runners show up for a day or two of camp. The list of former All-State Runners that have made appearances include: Ben Brammeier (Missouri), Eric Fernandez (Arkansas), Aimee Bonte (Missouri), Shannon Leinert (Missouri), Ben Murphy-Baum (Iowa State), Emily Sisson (Providence) and Serena Burla (Missouri).

YOUR CAMP FEE INCLUDES:

CAMP HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Running 101 Class- Each day we will have an expert talk about various topics including; weight training for runners, the importance of higher mileage, nutrition, injury prevention, proper shoe selection and more.

  • Free Stuff- We will have some surprise goodies from Big River Running Company to give away all week long including free shoes/spikes, winter apparel and more!

  • Running in College Panel Discussion- Current and former collegiate runners including former Missouri State Champions will answer questions about running in college, the recruitment process and the stresses of life at the next level.

  • Games- Big River camps are always famous for their games which have included Family Feud, One v. 100, Deal or No Deal and of course....Are you Smarter than Intern John!

  • Camp Race / Pancake Brunch- On Friday we will split our campers into teams for an end-of-camp race followed by the famous all-u-can eat pancake brunch at St. Louis University High School.

  • The Return of Intern John- Intern John (now a grad assistant at Syracuse University) will be home on break and will be on hand everyday to help lead camp.
  • T-Shirt Exchange- Campers from over 60 schools bring a school or race t-shirt to trade with other campers.

WHAT TO BRING?

  • This is a winter camp so it could be cold. Dress Accordingly.
  • Hats, Gloves, Jackets and pants are recommended. You can always shed layers
  • Water Bottle

CAMP FEES AND TEAM DISCOUNT:

  • The cost of the camp is $100 per athlete.
  • Teams of five or more who register as a group will receive $20 off each participant's fee

IMPORTANT INFO FOR PARENTS:

After the camper has registered, a camper packet including directions, a release form, and check-in information will be sent to each participant.

Note: Completed and signed release forms must be on file to participate. No exceptions will be made. A physician's signature is not required on the medical form if a copy of a recent physical is attached. The physical must be dated within one year of the camp.
