TRAIL DESCRIPTION: Beginning in the city of Glencoe and maintained by the city of Wildwood, the Al Foster Trail generally follows the Meramec River from the Al Foster Trailhead in Glencoe to the east through Sherman Beach and into Castlewood State Park. It provides scenic views of bluffs, bottomland forest and the Meramec River.
WHY WE LIKE IT: An easy, flat trail on a softer surface. Combine that with the beautiful scenic views along the bluffs of the Meramec and connections to the Rock Hollow Trail and Castlewood State Park, and its a runners paradise.
DIRECTIONS: From St. Louis Take I-44 West to Exit 264/Route 109 and head North. Follow Route 109 until you get to Old State Rd where you will make a right. Turn right quickly onto Washington Ave. Bear right onto Grand St and you will run directly into the parking lot and the trail head. From the Big River West County store, take Route 100/Manchester Rd until you reach Old State Rd. Head South on Old State Rd and turn leftonto Washington Ave. Bear right onto Grand St and you will run directly into the parking lot and the trail head.
DISTANCE: 4.5 miles point to point. (2.5 miles to Sherman Beach and another 2 miles to Castlewood State Park.)
TERRAIN: Eight (8) foot wide crushed stone trail.
