JOB DESCRIPTIONS (For Volunteers)
BACK-UP TIMER
As runners cross the finishline record each finisher's time with the provided hand-held stopwatch. Stay as close to the finishline as possible and try to record their times when their torso (chest) crosses the line. In larger races where large packs of runners cross the line at the same time do not worry about teh accuracy of the times rather focus on getting the correct number of times recorded for the number of finishers crossing the line.
SELECT TIMER (Manual)
Stay at the front of the chute and NEATLY and ACCURATELY record as many numbers and corresponding times as possible. It is important to record the top runners; an assistant may be helpful at this time. When the runners cross over in large groups, try to get the first and last person in the group. A good Select Timer can record a select time 12 times/minute, or one every five seconds. Please note that only the seconds of the time need to be recorded, as the minutes need to be recorded for the first new minute. One good way to stay focused is to write a number down, then record a time. Numbers without times for the most part are not helpful. Large groups finishing together are interpolated by the first and last persons time. For the most part accuracy will be better than 1-2 seconds. We will do this job, however at the end of the race when walkers are dribbling in we made need some help especially with larger races.
CHUTE MANAGEMENT
- Make sure that all runners stay IN ORDER once they cross the finish line; do not allow them to leave the chutes until their number has been recorded in order of finish.
- All running numbers must be pinned securely to the front of the runners' shirts and must be showing at the finish line.
- Make sure a runner only crosses the finish line once. If they cross twice it is difficult to verify because it could have been a mistake by the bib number recorder.
Bib/Tag Collector
This job us usually done in teams of 2-3 people. Before the runners finish you will need numbered spools to collect their tags. Stay near the end of the chute and collect EACH AND EVERY runner's id tag located at the bottom of their Race Number Bib as they exit the chute. Place the tags FACE DOWN on the spools to be read later by the race manager. Each spool can comfortably hold about 100 id tags. Be sure to use the spools in numerical order. If a runner does NOT have a bib number place a turkey tag (provided by race managers) in place of their id tag to aid the race manager in eliminating times recorded for non-registered runners.
