4M

23:39 (10/2006)

High School: JV Racquetball

College: Walked a lot, ran a few times (occasionally) as an undergraduate, and became a runner during graduate school.

Short Term Goal: 29:00 for 5M

Long Term Goal: 16:59 for 5K, and to race beyond 5M/8K

Daniel manages to work at Boeing, coach at Cor Jesu Academy, and still find time to train. His biggest assets are his natural calf strength, and the time he spends in the weight room to run better on hilly race courses. His biggest problems are the dead weight of his calves and the time that he must spend in the weight room to avoid ITB injuries. Daniel owes a large debt of gratitude to Adam MacDowell, with whom he started coaching, and to Scott Van Nest of the Sports Medicine Training Center, for helping him to run strong and without injury.

BETH DARE

Age: 38
Hometown: Rolla
High School: Rolla High School
College: University of MO-Rolla ( Missouri U. of Science & Tech, whatever…)

Degrees: B.S. Civil Engineering, 1993

PR's:

10 miles – 1:36:50 (Great River Road Run, 2007)
Half marathon – 2:22:48 (Lewis & Clark, 2007)

Favorite Movie:
A Fish Called Wanda, Better Off Dead, Wedding Crashers

Favorite Place to Train:
Fenton Park / George Winter Park loop, Grant's Trail

Favorite Breakfast Cereal:
Oatmeal Raisin Crisp. I could eat this stuff five times a day if I had to.

List the Most Played Song on Your Ipod or Radio:
None – my playlist always runs random, but it's mostly 80's stuff. Yeah, I'm stuck there. And yes, the 80's rocked!

Who's Better Superman or Batman?
Batman is just some yahoo in a mask and cape. Superman can actually fly, so he wins.

Fact or Fiction, the 80's Rocked?
See the iPod question above.

Short Term Goals:

- Train without injury and then successfully complete the Chicago Marathon this October
- Run a 5K race in less than 29:00
- Run a 10K in less than an hour (three seconds over… unbelievable…)
- Continue to improve my distance and speed
- Keep my knees happy

Long Term Goals:

- Keep running at a level that makes it enjoyable

Interesting Fact About me:

I started physical therapy recently to straighten out a misaligned jaw, but it turns out that being off-balance up there leads to imbalances in your neck, shoulders, back, hips, knees, etc. They are also planning to “teach me how to breathe” (oddly enough, I thought I had that one down), so maybe we'll see some improvement in my running when it's all said and done!

JEFF BROWN
Age: 38

High School: Vianney
College:  Southwest MO State U. (Now Missouri State)
Major: Economics

PRs:

10K

½ Marathon

1:50:30 ( St. Louis 2007)

Marathon

slow ( Chicago '05)

Short-term goal:  PRs in every distance during 2007 (hey, aim high).  Run a 1:45 or better half to qualify for the "D" corral at Chicago.  Put in proper training and give myself every opportunity for success at the 2007 Chicago Marathon.

Long-term goal:  Remain consistent with my training in order to see how well I can truly do in the races.  Teach my kids to love running and racing.

After an undistinguished high school track and CC career, Jeff went on to an equally forgettable college and post-college career as an on-again, off-again runner (note obvious gaps in the PRs above!).  After getting older and gaining way too much weight following the 2005 Chicago Marathon, Jeff decided to return to the streets, found Big River, and has already set new PRs for the 5M and ½ marathon!

College : Track and Field (all-OVC in the javelin in 1993 while competing for Southeast Missouri State University), Swim team for one year while at University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico

Short Term Goal : sub-17:00 for 5K

Long Term Goal : Just keep running as long as possible

Jim teaches French and Spanish at Kirkwood Middle School, and sometimes teaches night and summer classes at Forest Park Community College. Jim got into running late in his high school years, and continued for a couple more years after he graduated. He competed for the Track & Field team at Southeast Missouri -- not as a runner, but rather a javelin thrower. Jim didn't resume his running career until more than a decade later, when his friend Jordan Stone playfully let him know that while everyone else had gotten ten years older, Jim had somehow managed to stay the same age. In the fall of 2003, after his first 5K race in more than ten years yielded a time of 21:15 , Jim was again hooked, and focused on the ever-elusive goal of breaking 17:00 . Jim resides in Ballwin with his wife Maria and daughter Sara.

Long Term Goals:
- Keep my weight in the 150's
- Run two miles under 12:00
- Run a 5K under 19:00
- Be the best coach I can possibly be

Jordan teaches English, Health, and occasionally Physical Education at Farmington High School . He's also the head boys and girls Cross Country coach as well as an assistant Track & Field coach (working exclusively with the boys and girls distance runners). He's been running since he went out for track as a 7 th grader back in 1986. While his focus these days is much more on his coaching than it is his own personal running goals, he continues to race as much as possible. His biggest issue with running (at least with running fast) these days is his weight, which usually hovers around 175, a full 30 pounds heavier than his emaciated, yet much quicker self did in the mid-90's! He resides in Festus with his wife Angie, his daughter Kerensa, and his two chihuahua's, Bean and Peanut.

Interesting Fact About me: I never show up at a race without a particular person in mind that I would like to beat for the first time. I refer to beating that person as scratching someone off of my “to do” list. Making it on the list is very simple; if you beat me by 45 sec or less at any distance, you are automatically on that list. Once on the list, you are on it forever, or until I beat you, whichever comes first. Also, it goes without saying that this list is coed.
