Training Team

Big River offers a FREE, fun, friendly and first-class training program for runners and walkers of all ability levels to prepare for half and full marathons. This group is designed to help you on your personal fitness journey by providing you with pacers and running buddies who share similar goals, turning the tough grind of training into a fun, social experience. Offered twice a year, the Spring program runs from January to April and the Fall program runs from July to October.


Big River is determined to support the running community with safe programming that gives us a chance to train, run and connect.

We will offer a virtual and in-person option for most pace groups.

To keep things exciting for everyone and spur some friendly competition, all participants can participate in a team Mileage Challenge throughout the season to see which pace group (virtual and in-person combined) can run or walk the most cumulative miles during our season. When you register, join the Mileage Challenge team of the pacer/pace group you’d normally run with (even if you are participating virtually)!

The season will “run” from January 31 – April 12.

Before registering, think about how you’d like to participate this season. If you plan to run on your own, select either the free or the personalized plan Virtual option. If you want the opportunity to run with a small group on Sunday mornings, select either the free or the personalized plan In-person option. For in-person runs, we will be sending out an email each week to sign up for 1 of 9 slots for each pace group. Thanks in advance for being flexible and understanding that we may not be able to accommodate all interested runners each week.


Training Team Details

  • Weekly long runs on Sunday mornings at 7:30 am (meeting simultaneously at several locations to ensure our overall group size is smaller)
  • In-person runs: masks and social distancing required during gathering; pace groups will be limited to 10 runners or less; a health screening must be passed
  • Group runs on Monday evenings at 5:45 pm from Big River Running stores (South City & U City)
  • Weekly team emails to keep you informed
  • Age requirements – due to the nature of long runs, for safety reasons we can’t accommodate unaccompanied minors. Those under 18 must be accompanied by (running with) their guardian for the duration of any training run.

Having a training plan can help you stay injury free, improve your fitness and greatly increase the chances of achieving your goals! You now can have a training plan designed specifically for YOU! You deserve more than a generic training plan to help you achieve your goals!

It is WORTH THE INVESTMENT! Our plans are some of the most affordable you can find with a great success rate for goal achievement.

Each training plan comes with specific pace recommendations, daily mileage assignments and can be personalized for your life schedule and goal race. Additionally, for those that sign up, you will be able to contact a coach directly via email, text or phone.

Did you know? You never get the same plan twice. We always progress each individual’s plan every time they sign up, meaning it gets more challenging to better help you meet your goals.

Note: If you would like more structure/advice than suggested Sunday mileage, we recommend you sign up for a plan! An individualized plan is the best way to help you achieve your goals. Plans at this price structure are designed to be 12-week plans for goal races in April (or close to that timeframe). Commemorate our social distanced version of Training Team with long sleeve Brooks tech shirt.

Shirts are gender specific and run true to size. Order during registration and we’ll coordinate store pick-up or shipping when shirts come in. Deadline to order a shirt is February 14.

In addition, we are offering a Big River logoed Buff for purchase. While we require a mask to be worn while gathering, we’d also like all participants to wear a buff or gaiter to be pulled up when passing runners or at a stop light, etc.

Our meeting locations for in-person runs will be shared via email with registered participants only. In addition, we will be meeting in several locations simultaneously on Sundays at 7:30 a.m. to keep the overall size of our group smaller.
